DART to Angelika

The Bell Family Unit tried a new Adventure in Speed yesterday.

We wanted to go see a movie in Dallas – THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS   – at the Angelika Film Center located in Mockingbird Station, an artsy high tech development with a DART (Dallas Area Rapid Transit) rail station right in middle of it.  Cyndy, being the adventurer she is, was ready to ride shotgun with me even if she didn’t know who the @#$%  Dr. Parnassus is. I sure didn’t know what an imaginarium was, but I had already decided I wanted to go to one.

Is was a patriotic start to our adventure by taking the President George Bush Turnpike where the speed limit is 70 MPH and you can really run that fast through town. The Star Spangled Banner playing on the CD. Electronic toll tags monitoring our progress and collecting toll without us even slowing down. So they have this brand new toll road (of course, oops that wasn’t politically correct) and a brand new rail station but you have to loop around surface streets and shopping centers to get to the parking lot. I would have thought you would have had an exit straight into DART. So we can see the parking lot when the rail crossing arm comes down and our train passes southbound right in front of us. The train was on time…

This gave us a chance to look around the station for 20 minutes while “waiting on a train”. Wasn’t that a song? There is an automated ticket vending machine, but it only takes cash. So I can pay for tolls at 70 MPH but you can’t buy a DART ticket to ride with your debit card. Nice. The next train was on time as well.

I enjoyed the train ride and we moved around several times with Cyndy finally ending up right behind the driver. It must be a drivers thing or something, right?  You get to see a lot of things you just don’t see when you’re driving. And I know this part of Dallas, but I saw stuff I had never noticed. There were several flowing streams that had nice white water going over big limestone rocks. It was kind of a shame when they ran into a huge concrete ditch and disappeared under a bridge. As fancy as all that new track is, the car still squirmed around quite a bit. But it was clean bright and comfortable, although Cyndy thought it was noisy.

Mockingbird  Station is subterranean, but open above with nice glass  elevators up to street level. I knew  the theatre was close, but it was the first thing I saw, right there. Very cool.

We arrived at the station at 2:54 for a 3:00 movie, walked 50 feet to the box office swiped my plastic to buy tickets and drinks and were in our seats for the last preview. – THE IMAGINARIUM OF DR. PARNASSUS   – was the movie Keith Ledger was working on when he over-dosed and died. The Dark Knight was in post production so it wasn’t even out yet. I don’t know what to tell you about the movie it was so out there, but we both liked it. Imagine a gypsy trailer that when you went inside, the inside was your imagination – good or bad. Hell, it just hit me writing this that they had that on Star Trek and called it The Halodeck. Oh well, it was a fun time to a new place in a new way with my lovely and talented wife.

Awwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww
